    This unique opportunity allows you for forge and make two vital parts of the woodworker’s tool kit.

    after a warm up project, we will forge your own Marking knife made from tool steel to ensure its longevity, and a Awl for... well... everything you need an awls for! Both can be personalised with your initials for that extra something.

    All this while being surrounded by picturesque woodland allowing you the opportunity to say things like 'ooo imagine the grain in that!' and 'is that beech? ... no no... I think you mean Fagus Sylvatica... tut tut'

    We welcome anyone in any stage of their wood cycle whether you’re a seasoned professional with your own workshop, a hobbyist or you just tinker in the garage every now and then! This is a fun yet rewarding corse to spend among like-minded folks making tools to aid you every day in the pursuit of sawdust.


    Hosted by Bill's Workshop in Partnership with Pathhill Outdoors this course will be located at Pathhill Woodland Forge in South Oxfordshire. Parking is easily available onsite with hot drinks and snacks provided throughout the day but please bring your own lunch and a refillable water bottle. This course with a small number of participants (3) allows for in depth personal instruction with our expert smith over the 8-hour day.


    The Days Overview:

    Arrive for a 9:30 start at Pathhill Outdoors, after a hot drink and getting to know the team and woodland workshop the forges will be lit and blacksmithing will commence! Throughout the day you forge on a Victorian coal forge starting with a warm up project. We then move onto forging your marking knife after lunch your Awl. Learning this ancient craft gives you a taste of the other side of the coin as metal and wood have always been closely aligned when it comes to English made tools and the great British manufacturing industry. We will then head into the Barn workshop to put an edge on your making knifes and clean up your hand forged tools! the day will come to a close around 4-6 depending on how we progress through the day.

    • For this course you do need to be reasonably fit and healthy as it is hot and hard work throughout the day on your feet.
    • If you have any concerns or a disability, please get in contact to discuss what arrangements can be made to make the course more accessible for you
    • Please wear full length trousers (an old pair of jeans are ideal), clothes you don’t mind getting dirty as well as old trainers or boots - no open toed shoes, flip flops, sliders.
    • Please allow for the fact that this course may overrun timings until 6pm
