Child and Guardian Course
A fantastic introduction to blacksmithing for enthusiastic young people aged 16 & 17 with a Guardian or Parent strictly on a 1-2-1 basis with a member of our knowledgeable crew.
With the School system pushing academia, we decided to push back and open up a course for competent youngsters on the ancient, practical skill of blacksmithing. With the owner of Bills Workshop, Billy Goodworth's first experience of blacksmithing aged 16, we see the importance of giving the next generation of potential smiths a taste of the excitement, skill and passion of forging metal.
- One purchase is for a Child and Parent (£230 per person, £460 for A Child and Guardian)
- This course is strictly for Children aged 16 & 17, we cannot teach younger. No exceptions.
- There must be a supportive Adult who takes responsibility for the child during this time, either a Parent, Guardian or close family relation, they partake in the fun too!
How it works
During this course you will have one dedicated smith per parent and child. Our instructor will show you the techniques and methods as well as keep an eye on safety following a safety brief. However, it is the responsibility of the Guardian to keep an eye on and monitor the child's personal safety and behaviour in the forge, taking full responsibility for the Child present.
Days overview
Please arrive for a 10am start where you will venture to the workshop to meet the team and get to know the workshop. After you have a hot drink and safety brief, we will light the gas forge and begin learning the basic steps of blacksmithing making a traditional 'apprentice' project, a forged shepherds crook fire poker for use on indoor fires or campfires alike. After a break for lunch (you will be given plenty of tea and cake but you will need to bring your own packed lunch), we will move onto our second project, a high carbon steel Viking style fire steel to use for campfires and show off at Scouts! If we have any time remaining, we will finish with a hand forged pendant with the day coming to a close at 4pm.
